Earthquake awareness saves lives in Chile
03.01.2011, Age: 866 days
The Mw 7.1 earthquake that struck the area of Araucania, near the coast of Chile on Sunday, January 02, 2011, appears to have caused little damage and no injuries. This very likely is the result of the great earthquake awareness and high quality of earthquake resistant building in Chile.
To be on the safe side, the coastal population evacuated to higher grounds despite assurance by the government that no tsunamis had been forecast. This demonstrates the high geohazard awareness, which after many years of training, has become second nature for the Chileans. This will no doubt continue to save lives, even when more serious earthquakes and tsunamis will hit the country.
USGS reports: The January 2nd 2011 earthquake occurred at the southern end of the aftershock region of the Mw 8.8 megathrust earthquake of February 27, 2010, and can also be considered an aftershock of that event.
