Evidence for past link between Weddell and Ross Embayments in Antarctica

02.09.2010, Age: 4039 days

West Antarctic Ice Sheet instability confirmed by unexpected source.

Scientists from the British Antarctic Survey found strikingly similar marine fauna in the Ross Sea and Weddell Sea that are now 1500 km apart and separated by the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS). This is compelling evidence for WAIS collapse during the last interglacial, opening a seaway that allowed marine fauna, notably bryozoans, to migrate between the two seas.
